The Clubs Used for the Benchmark

The golf clubs behind the benchmark data collection area set of custom-fit Ping i15 blades with steel shafts. I purchased my Ping i15’s new in 2011. I had to have them custom fit for two reasons.

  1. I knew the importance of having correctly sized golf clubs
  2. I’m 6’5 so it is impossible to find golf clubs off the rack.

I know my clubs are now ten years old, but I am having trouble justifying purchasing more updated ones due to the fact they still get “ahem” better reviews that other ones out there today. However, I may be proven wrong by my testing when I start reviewing clubs.

Wilson Deep Red 3 Wood

My 3 Wood: Wilson Deep Red with a Grafalloy Pro Lite+ .428 fat shaft, stiff flex. I will be looking to purchase a new one of these as this club first came out not long after the dinosaurs became extinct. The Wilson Deep Red Fat Shaft first came out in 2003. I fell in love with this club due to how well I can hit and control the ball.

My Driver:  Is the TaylorMade R9 460, with a 9.5-degree loft. The shaft is an Aldila voodoo snv6 with the stock shaft, stiff flex.

Neither my Driver or 3 Wood is custom fit. One more thing I want to add is my grips are jumbo Golf Pride Grips. These are larger than recommended for my hand size. I choose jumbo grips due to how well they felt in my hand, and I did not have to squeeze the club as much. After playing with the jumbo grips for a few months, I believe I don’t have as much control of my golf clubs as I did with the correct size grip, which I will explore for you soon
